Our Classes
Stars International Academy (SIA) pre-school uses Montessori syllabus. Montessori is a method of education that is based on self-directed activity, hands-on learning, and collaborative play.
What we do is still teach the general learning of Math, Language, Art, P.E. among others but instead of having the students sit down and repeat what we want to teach, we use a hands-on approach.
Students have one-on-one time with the teacher, all lessons have practical elements to the learning such as physically sorting out colours, counting using games e.t.c in the end the kids are taught how to hold pencils; drawing, trace numbers, shapes and letters, how to cut and glue in practical manner which is fun too.
Montessori school classes are mixed classes ranging from 1-3 Years, 3-6 Years, and so on.
Lower Class
Age: 1-3 Years Old
Students in this class learn the alphabet, both letter names and what sound they make. This helps with reading and spelling later on, counting and identifying numbers, colours, shapes, in practical learning how to trace numbers, letters, shapes. We have set lesson theme plans e.g. The Body (During this particular theme the students will learn the daily basics but also added on learning and naming different body parts, their functions etc.) Depending on the theme they last between 2-4 weeks.
Middle Class
Age: 3 - 4 Years Old
In the middle class the kids are starting to write letters, as well as their own names, and numbers do basic counting and math for example simple additions e.t.c. The Middle Class also follows themes and learns things more extensively than the lower class.
The requirements to enter this class are knowing letter sounds, shapes, and colours, being able to count up to 30, ability to trace and identify numbers.
Upper Class (Pre Grade 1)
Age: 4 - 5 Year olds
At SIA we cater to both students who will continue with the Montessori program and those who will continue using the standard school system.
The upper class prepares students for the primary section. In the upper class, students are able to read sentences do subtraction and multiplication, spell simple words e.t.c.
Primary School
The primary school uses a combination of Cambridge and Malawi syllabus. The Cambridge syllabus is a framework that provides a curriculum for the key subjects of English, Mathematics and Science. Other subjects are based upon the English National Curriculum. They include Art, Geography, History, Music, Physical Education, and Personal and Social Education, while in the Malawi syllabus we picked other subjects except for Mathematics, English and Science.
